Central province

The highlands in Sri Lanka. From 1860, the major area where famous for Ceylon tea production planted by the British, after a disease killed all the coffee plantations in the central province. The beauty of the places such as Kandy, Gampola, Hatton and Nuwara Eliya attracts by the both locals and the tourists. People pilgrimage to Sri Pada or Adam’s peak regardless of the religion. Sigiriya rock is also situated in central province which is known to a world heritage. Matale is another district where a person can experience a cool climate with chilly nights. With 7000 mm of rain per year, western slopes are very wet. Since the eastern slopes receive rain only from North-Eastern monsoon it makes a mid-dry area. In Kandy,the temperature averaged to 24ºC while 16ºC in Nuwara Eliya. The highest mountains in Sri Lanka are located in this province. The land is mostly hilly, with deep valleys cutting into it.

 

Kandy

The capital of central province named as a world heritage site. Home to the relic of the tooth of the Buddha from 1592 known as ‘Dalada Maligawa’(Palace of the Tooth relic ), Pilgrimage for Buddhists specially to the Theravada school. It is also popular because of the annual Esala Perahera festival which one of the inner caskets used for covering the tooth relic of Buddha is taken in a grand procession through the streets of the Kandy city. This is taken on a tusker of royal caste. The traditional dancers and drummers, flag bearers of the provinces of the old Kandyan kingdom, the Nilames or the lay custodians of temples , torch bearers and also the grandly attired elephants are included in this ceremony. They all wear their traditional dresses. Large number of people come to see this ceremony which is annually held in the months of July or August and also many foreign tourists. The Buddhists believe that this ceremony will bring rain and prosperity to the country.

 

Peradeniya

The one of the most beautiful botanical gardens in Asia, is located here in Peradeniya. The Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya, is situated in the slope of Mahaweli river which attracts locals as well as foreigners.

 

Nuwara Eliya

The beauty of flowers and fauna makes alive Nuwara-Eliya during the month of April attracting lot of Locals and foreigners. Nuwara Eliya has the coolest climate in Sri Lanka. Idol attractions at this time are supercross at the Diyatalawa circuit, Formula Three car racing, and horse racing and the flower show. Also the city include the golf courses, trout streams, park, and boating or fishing on Lake Gregory. The Victoria Park is famous among the birdwatchers as it is home for various species, particularly the Indian Blue Robin, Pied Thrush or Scaly Thrush lurking in the denser bushes. Kashmir Flycatcher is another attractive bird species which can be found in the park. Galway's Land Bird Sanctuary is another wild life site situated near the Lake Gregory.

Horton Plains National Park is a key wildlife area of open grassy woodland. Species such as Leopard, Sambar, and the endemic Purple-faced Langur are found here..

From all parts of the Sri Lanka and foreign are attracted to see World's End, a sheer precipice with a 1050 m drop. The picturesque beauty of the Baker Falls brings a totally different feeling from the World’s end . To experience the excitement of World’s end with wild life, the journey must start early morning before mists cover in during the later part of the morning.

There are some tea factories which offer guided tours and the opportunity to sample or purchase their products.

Because of the cool and exiting celebrating environment, it is known as “Little England” among locals.



Pidurutalagala

The highest mountain in the country also known as mount Pedro. The height is 2.534 meters or 8,281 in feet. It is close to city of Nuwara-Eliya.

 

Hatton

A small town in Nuwara-Eliya district, its famous in tea production of Sri Lanka. One of the gateways to Sri Pada or Adam's Peak, many pilgrims and tourists pass through here as it is in the Colombo-Badulla railway line. The other gateway is from Ratnapura, which is quite hard to climb.
