Anuradhapura
A world heritage sites and a major archaeological site. Well conserved ruins of the Great Sri Lankan Civilization can be seen in the sacred city of Anuradhapura. The Civilization which was built upon this city was known as one of the greatest civilizations of Asia and in the world.. From 4th century BC to beginning of the 11th century, it was the capital of the Anuradhapura Kingdom . Also known to be one of the most stable and durable centers of political power and urban life in South Asia at that time. A wealthy city which created a unique culture with a great civilization. This ancient city,is sacred to the Buddhists, with the surrounding monasteries even at present.
The great building era was when vast monastery complexes and some of the tallest buildings in the ancient world were built. Still the highest brick structure in the world is known as the Jetavanaramaya dagaba . In parallel the old emperors have built large tanks in these areas to cultivate the lands. There are some ancient ruins of hospital complexes too. The Sri Maha Bodhiya or the Bodhi tree is the most sacred shrine in Anuradhapura,specially to the Buddhists.
Polonnaruwa
A great ancient city known as a world heritage site. Famous ancient Kingdom with the king Parakramabahu, who built the largest tank ‘Parakrama Samudraya’(sea of Parakrama) . The ancient ruins and the tanks gives the evidence to prove the complete self sufficiency Sri Lanka had at that time of the history. The tropical climate changes to a chilly climate during December to January.
