Sri Lanka Today
Sri Lanka like any other country today is neither dangerous nor safe. But certainly worth watching."Sri Lanka like any other country has its share of risks”.
Sri Lanka has been fighting a 25 year civil war with the LTTE(Liberation Tamil Tigers
of Eelam)who have been claiming for a separate state in the Northan and Eastern parts of Sri Lanka.
Today fighting is limited to a small parts of the Eastern province and the North Central province or Wanni district, which are tiger held territory. Although much of the Island remains safe, occationaly the North and East parts of the island are effected by fighting. And in a few occations Colombo, Sri Lankas' commercial capital was bombed by the LTTE. Tourists were never targeted in the fighting throught the years.
Sri Lanka is not a target of Islamic Terrorism and was never effected by deadly dieseas outbreaks like the SARS or bird flu. Although the country remains free of majority of contagious and deadly dieseases you may be required to have certain vaccinations before coming to Sri Lanka, to prevent introducing new diseases to the country. In December 2004 the Asian Tsunami greatly damaged the coast of Sri Lanka, since the country was ill prepared and tsunamis' were never heard of. Since then tsunami readyness has greatly improved in the region.
